Street food at its best
My love for spicy food takes me every too often to this out-of-the-world place called Shams chaat.
Lovingly known as Shamsu maama, the man has come a long way from selling his tasty chaat, cholay and bun kebab for many years in a school canteen to selling out on weekends from a handcart to the current chaat house.
Although undersized and congested, the eating hall is definitely a great relief for the myriad fans of the Shams chaat.
Located on Britto Road in Karachi, the place is definitely not impressive by the way of ambiance, if that really matters..!
It offers seating arrangement for about 20 people only, yet the main counter or the sitting room can never be found vacant at any time of the day and it can take any where from 10 minutes to well over half an hour to get your order.
As I am always hunting for desi junk food, I can say that Shams chaat is a place that will never disappoint you; rather the chances are that you may end up overeating. The menu offers a range of papri chaat that are all scrumptious to savour but perhaps are quite similar in taste. The pani puri, just as the chaat, is a striking feature of this place, the spicy tamarind water being so flavour-some and delightfully piquant that you feel like sipping it on its own. For those who find pani puri too spicy, dahi puri emblished with thick curd and chutney is a great replacement, though it is loved even by pani puri fans.
Another great treat on the menu and my personal favourite is cholay wala bun, with just the perfect blend of grams, spices and papri. to add to its charm, you can order red chilli tamarind chutney along with it.
The eatery does not offer French fries but if you want you can buy potato chips from Asia bakery just opposite the chaat house. the crispy chips with the saucy bun accompanied with any drink makes a great combo.
Although off the menu, the khattey aalu—–one of the ingredients of chana chaat———-provided separately on request, are worth a try. Many people love the bhel puri as well, but it does not work for me as I am not a bhell puri fan.
The specialty of Shams chaat is that every-thing is healthy and hygienically prepared——— made by a professionales yet best owing a touch of home made authenticity.
The fact that all its items are almost soldout by eight in the night signifies that the food is always fresh.
Despite the fact that every thing on the menu is a peppery indulgence, you will find there people of all ages. The best part of it is that you can eat to your heart’s content yet yet spend so less that you might wonder if you have spent any thing at all.
So the  end note is that whether you choose to eat in your car parked by the shop or take away for home, Shams chaat will bring spice to your life..
